Understanding CGST, SGST and IGST

Under GST, a sale within the same state or union territory is an intra-state supply. It attracts CGST (collected by the Centre) and SGST (collected by the State), or UTGST in a union territory, each at half the GST rate. For an 18% item, that is 9% CGST + 9% SGST.

A sale to a customer in another state is an inter-state supply and attracts IGST at the full rate, for example 18% IGST. The deciding factor is the place of supply, which for most goods is where the goods are delivered and for most services is the customer's registered location.

Getting this wrong means an incorrect invoice, a mismatch in your customer's input tax credit and extra work at filing time. Go2Invoice takes the decision out of your hands by comparing your registered state with the place of supply on every invoice, and it shows you which tax applies before you save.

FAQ

GST billing questions

What is GST billing software?

GST billing software creates tax invoices that follow India's GST rules: it shows your GSTIN and your customer's, the place of supply, HSN/SAC codes and the correct tax (CGST + SGST or IGST), and it keeps records you need to file returns such as GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

How does Go2Invoice decide between CGST + SGST and IGST?

It compares your registered state (from your GSTIN or address) with the place of supply of each invoice (from the customer's GSTIN or state). Same state means CGST + SGST; different states mean IGST. Union territories use UTGST. You can review and change the place of supply on any invoice.

Which GST reports are available?

GSTR-1 sections (B2B, B2CL, B2CS, credit/debit notes for registered and unregistered customers, nil-rated/exempt, HSN summary and documents issued), a GSTR-3B summary, and detailed GST sales and purchase registers, all exportable to CSV and PDF.

Does Go2Invoice file my GST returns?

Go2Invoice prepares the figures and reports you or your accountant need for filing. Returns are filed on the GST portal.

Can I add HSN and SAC codes?

Yes. Save the HSN or SAC code on each item or service once and it is added to every invoice and to the HSN summary in GSTR-1.

Is it suitable for composition dealers and unregistered businesses?

Yes. You can record each customer's GST treatment (registered, composition, unregistered, consumer, overseas or SEZ) and create invoices whether or not you charge GST.
